Cameo vs MagicDraw: what's actually different (and what's just branding)
They're the same modeling engine — the real difference is which plugins come bundled. Here's how to tell which one you need.

They're the same core platform
Open both side by side and you'd struggle to tell them apart: same menus, same project structure, same containment tree, same .mdzip files. That's not coincidence — they run on one engine. No Magic wrote MagicDraw as a general modeling tool, then packaged that same engine, with the systems-engineering plugins switched on, as Cameo Systems Modeler. Dassault Systèmes bought No Magic in 2018 and folded both into its CATIA line, but the architecture underneath never split. A model authored in one opens in the other, given the right plugins. So when a job posting treats “Cameo” and “MagicDraw” as two different skills, it's really describing two configurations of the same software.
The real difference: what's bundled
The honest difference is the plugin bundle, not the engine.
MagicDraw ships as the UML core. It models software architecture out of the box; you add capability — SysML, simulation, code generation — as separate plugins when you need them.
Cameo Systems Modeler ships with the systems-engineering stack already in place. The SysML plugin and the Cameo Simulation Toolkit come bundled and configured, so you're modeling in SysML the moment it opens — no assembling a toolchain first.
You'll also meet a third name: Cameo Enterprise Architecture. Same engine again, this time bundled with enterprise-architecture and DoDAF/UAF plugins for framework modeling. Pick the bundle that matches the work; the tool underneath is identical.
Which one do you actually need?
- Modeling systems in SysML (architecture, requirements, behavior, V&V)? Cameo Systems Modeler. This is the one.
- Modeling software in UML, with SysML out of the picture? MagicDraw is the lighter base.
- Doing DoDAF/UAF framework work? Cameo Enterprise Architecture, or Cameo Systems Modeler with the framework plugin added.
If you're a systems engineer in defense or aerospace, the call is effectively made for you. Cameo is the de facto standard on those programs — the artifacts, the training, and the contractor expertise are all built around it.

Why the same tool has so many names
Cameo, MagicDraw, No Magic, CATIA Magic, 3DEXPERIENCE — the name soup is all acquisition branding. No Magic was the original company. Dassault Systèmes acquired it in 2018 and rebranded the portfolio as CATIA No Magic, then CATIA Magic, pulling it toward the 3DEXPERIENCE platform. The product wasn't replaced; the label on the invoice changed. If your install says “Cameo Systems Modeler” and a Dassault page says “CATIA Magic,” you're looking at the same lineage.
