Cameo: Systems Engineer profile vs UML project (and why it matters)
Start a plain UML project in Cameo and the SysML toolset MBSE depends on simply isn't there. Pick the right project type from the start.

Why this trips people up
The two project types share the same Cameo interface — same menus, same containment tree, same toolbar layout — so the difference isn't obvious until you go hunting for a SysML element and it simply isn't on the palette. A UML project does not load the SysML profile at all, so SysML diagram types, block definition diagrams, internal block diagrams, requirements diagrams, and parametric diagrams are all unavailable. New users assume the tool is broken or that they need a different install, when the real issue is the project type chosen at creation.
The confusion is compounded by the naming. “Systems Engineer profile” and “UML project” sound like settings you can toggle after the fact, not distinct project types that govern which modeling profile is baked in from the start. They're not toggleable — the project records the profile it was created with, and that shapes everything from diagram availability to plugin version requirements.
How to start the right project
Open the New Project dialog via File > New Project (or Ctrl+Shift+N). The dialog organizes templates by domain. The default domain is General-Purpose Modeling, which contains the UML Project template — that's the software-modeling baseline. For MBSE work, switch to the System Engineering domain; the SysML project template lives there. Select it, name your project, and Cameo opens with the SysML profile already applied and the full MBSE toolset on the palette.
MSOSA and CATIA Magic use the same dialog and domain/template structure. The available domains vary with which plugins are licensed, but if the SysML plugin is present, the System Engineering domain and its SysML template will appear.
How to tell which one you're in
Two quick checks confirm which project type you're working in:
- Palette / diagram menu. Open the diagram creation menu. If SysML diagram types — Block Definition Diagram, Internal Block Diagram, Requirements Diagram, Parametric Diagram — appear, the SysML profile is loaded. If only UML diagram types appear, it's a plain UML project.
- Containment tree. Expand the model root in the Containment tree and look for the SysML profile listed as a used module or applied profile. Its presence confirms the SysML toolset is in scope.
Perspectives vs profiles — don't mix them up
Cameo has a separate concept called Perspectives, switched via Options > Perspectives. The documented perspectives — Full Featured, Quick Start, Software Architect, System Analyst — control which features and menus are visible in the UI. They do not control which modeling profile is loaded. Switching to “Full Featured” (the right perspective for most SysML work) does not give you SysML if you opened a UML project; it just exposes more of the interface.
There is no official “System Engineer perspective” or “Systems Engineer profile” as a UI toggle. The SysML capability comes from the project type chosen at creation, not from the perspective setting. For SysML work, use Full Featured perspective in a SysML project.
Can you switch a UML project to SysML?
Technically yes — the SysML profile can be applied to an existing UML project after the fact. But it is not the recommended path, and for good reason: profiles are version-locked. A project records the exact profile and plugin versions it was created with. Retrofitting the SysML profile onto a project that didn't start with it risks a version mismatch between the SysML plugin and the profile the project expects, which can surface as broken diagram types, missing stereotypes, or validation errors that are difficult to trace.
The safer route — and the officially recommended one — is to start fresh from the SysML (System Engineering) template. If you have content in an existing UML project worth preserving, the cleanest migration path is to create a new SysML project and move or re-author the relevant elements there.
2026x: SysML v1 vs v2 is a separate choice
In certain 2026x editions, Cameo also lets you choose SysML v1 or v2 per project when you create it.
